Irakli Kobakhidze, the head of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Thursday highlighted friendly ties with Azerbaijan were of “strategic importance” for the Georgian Government.

Kobakhidze noted Georgia’s progress in European integration was also important for Azerbaijan, in response to comments by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, who on Wednesday said his country and Georgia could present themselves as a “united, strategically important team in Europe”.

It is very good when the President of our friendly country looks at our European integration from this point of view. Our progress on the path of European integration is also important for Azerbaijan, which is our friend, neighbouring country, and the statement made by Aliyev is very interesting and important”, Kobakhidze said.

In his remarks, Aliyev also added Azerbaijan “fully understands” Georgia’s desire to join the European Union and wished the “Georgian friends” success in the process.
