Irakli Kadagishvili, the Chair of the Rules and Procedural Issues Committee of the Georgian Parliament, on Tuesday said snap Parliamentary elections could “not be legally held” with the scheduled 2024 voting approaching, and added there were “no political prerequisites” for calling a snap vote in the country.
Kadagishvili’s comments followed a comment by Zurab Girchi Japaridze, the leader of the Girchi – More Freedom opposition party, who on Tuesday said “one way to get the ruling Georgian Dream party out of power is through snap elections”.
The opposition, and specifically Zurab Girchi Japaridze, know that they have no chance of obtaining any significant results through elections. The opposition knows very well how small their electoral resources are. Therefore, they are clinging on to a [prospect of a] revolution”, Kadagishvili said.
In his rejection of the call, the Parliament official claimed “citizens are not waiting for a revolution”, and called the opposition figure’s comments “an imitation of creating a storm in a teacup”.
