Levan Ioseliani, the Public Defender of Georgia, on Thursday met with Oleksandr Korniyenko, the Deputy Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament, in Kyiv, with discussions centred around fostering cooperation between the two nations in safeguarding human rights and addressing shared challenges.
Ioseliani also participated in an international human rights conference titled Freedom or Fear, hosted in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Human Rights. Volker Türk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Dunja Miatović, the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, and Tena Šimonović, Public Defender of Croatia, delivered messages through video links, the Public Defender’s Office said.
The discussions at the conference encompassed the ongoing conflict in Ukraine with Russia, humanitarian projects, and the “impact of human rights protection amid dictatorships”.
Participants engaged in discussions over challenges associated with reconstructing Ukraine from wartime conditions and post-victory scenarios. They also explored prospects for shaping the future based on historical precedents, infrastructural development in reclaimed territories, and the imperative of justice through crime documentation, accountability and the need for effective security guarantees rooted in the rule of law, the Ombudsman’s office added.
Dmytro Lubinets, the Ukrainian Parliament’s Commissioner for Human Rights, extended personal gratitude to Ioseliani during the conference’s opening for his attendance and involvement.
