Oleksiy Goncharenko, the Ukrainian MP, on Friday called for international sanctions on the founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party and former prime minister Bidzina Ivanishvili, following his allegations the GD MPs had refused to vote for “condemning” of Russian and Ukrainian presidents in PACE.
“Georgia’s ruling party has chosen Putin’s dream over the dreams of its people. Not a single representative of the Georgian ruling party in PACE voted to condemn Putin and Lukashenko. It’s time for the world to wake up and see who they are serving. It is time for sanctions against Ivanishvili”, the MP tweeted.
The domestic Georgian opposition and several MEPs claim Ivanishvili is running the country from the backstage and “dragging” the country back to Russia.
Ivanishvili’s Georgian Dream coalition defeated the previous United National Movement founded by the currently imprisoned former president Mikheil Saakashvili in the 2012 parliamentary elections and has been taking office since then.
