Romania firmly supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova (note that the current president of Moldova, Maia Sandu, is a Romanian citizen – ed.) , but at the same time condemns all attempts at destabilization initiated from abroad, – said the head of state Klaus Iohannis in a statement to press, published on the website of the administration of the President of Romania today, February 15.

President Iohannis is extremely concerned about public warnings that Russia will try to overthrow the constitutional order of the sovereign Republic of Moldova through illegal interference in order to change the “democratically and freely chosen political orientation of the country.” In his opinion, the threats to destabilize Moldova’s “European path” should be taken seriously, especially in the context of the current security and economic crises.

“Moldova has a place in the big family of the European Union. It is an irreversible path that must be pursued consistently, boldly and ambitiously. In this accession process, Moldova can continue to count on the full solidarity and active support of our country”,

This is how Romanian President Iohannis reacted to Maia Sandu’s televised speech on Monday. She then warned the people of Moldova that Russia was allegedly making new attempts to destabilize the country, using sabotage to overthrow the Chisinau government in order to put the country under Russian influence and thereby prevent its planned entry into the European Union. The Republic of Moldova received the status of an EU candidate in June last year.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Tuesday that Russia rejects Sandu’s claim as completely unfounded and unsubstantiated.
